Our vision
We want to see families, communities and services coming together to ensure that all babies, children and young people have an equal chance to thrive.
But what are the big ideas which underpin this vision that are important to us, and what does this mean for our work?
1. Families, communities and services coming together
We are essentially talking about the village. The African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” is a powerful one. In the UK context, it highlights the balance between what families do to help their children live their best lives; what communities and peer networks do to make families feel rooted and connected; and what services do to guide and support all families, offering more help to those who need it most.
This ‘village’ looks different for every child, but it is always built on trust and relationships.
2. All babies, children and young people
Debates about publicly funded services often focus on whether support should be universal or targeted, or on whether to prioritise babies, toddlers, or adolescents. But let’s flip the narrative. Our vision is that all babies, children and young people should flourish.
This means taking a whole-life approach and prioritising prevention — because even those who get a strong start may need help later. Decades of evidence also show that trust is built when services are relational rather than transactional. Support should be part of a wider system, available to everyone, and not just framed as one-off “interventions” for families labelled as vulnerable.
3. An equal chance to thrive
At the heart of our vision is fairness. Too often, children’s opportunities are shaped by circumstances beyond their control — where they are born, family income, or barriers created by inequality and discrimination.
An equal chance to thrive means removing these barriers and building systems that don’t just level the playing field, but actively enable every child to flourish. This is about equity, not just equality: recognising that different children and families need different kinds and levels of support.
What this means for our values
Our values are the foundation of how we put this vision into practice: curiosity to understand, humility to listen, equity to challenge injustice, and collaboration to build change.
Together, these values guide how we turn vision into reality — ensuring that our work is principled, practical and impactful.
Curiosity keeps us asking the right questions — about what children and families need, how services can adapt, and how the system helps or hinders.
Humility shapes the way we work with evidence: not as experts with all the answers, but as partners who listen, learn and share knowledge in ways that empower others.
Equity anchors our commitment to dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring that those who have been marginalised are placed at the centre of solutions.
Collaboration reminds us that lasting change cannot be achieved alone. It requires strong relationships, shared purpose, and collective action across the system.
